John B. DeVito
Executive Director
John B. DeVito serves as Executive Director of the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation, bringing to FEHSF more than 27 years of federal law enforcement leadership, violent-crime reduction experience, public-safety strategy, and firsthand understanding of the sacrifices made by law enforcement and national security professionals and their families.
Mr. DeVito retired from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as the Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Division, where he served from January 2019 until his retirement in April 2024. In that role, he was responsible for ATF operations across the State of New York and led efforts focused on gun violence reduction, firearms trafficking, crime gun intelligence, arson and explosives investigations, and partnerships with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Public biographies identify him as a member of the Senior Executive Service during his ATF leadership career.
During his ATF career, Mr. DeVito served in multiple field and headquarters assignments, including Miami, Washington, D.C., Virginia, New Jersey, and New York. His work included investigations involving armed drug trafficking organizations, armed robberies, carjackings, gang-related violence, firearms trafficking, and other violent-crime matters. He also served for more than a decade on ATF’s Special Response Team and later held leadership roles connected to ATF’s firearms enforcement strategy, the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, and national firearms trafficking policy.
As Special Agent in Charge in New York, Mr. DeVito helped advance intelligence-driven approaches to gun violence reduction and strengthen operational partnerships among ATF, the NYPD, federal prosecutors, and other law enforcement agencies. Public reporting has credited his leadership with helping drive more coordinated firearms tracing, crime gun intelligence, and interagency response to violent crime in New York.
Mr. DeVito’s commitment to public safety is also deeply personal. His own life was shaped by gun violence at a young age, an experience that helped define his career of service and his belief that law enforcement must protect the most vulnerable while also supporting the families of those who serve.
As Executive Director of FEHSF, Mr. DeVito now focuses that same sense of urgency on the Foundation’s humanitarian mission: providing immediate support to law enforcement and national security professionals and their families when tragedy, injury, illness, loss, or hardship strikes. His leadership reflects FEHSF’s role as a financial first responder — moving quickly, acting with compassion, and ensuring that families who have sacrificed in service to the nation know they are not alone.
